Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) is the original 8-week training in mindfulness developed at Mass Medical Center by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn. Through weekly lessons, home practice, and group discussion, participants are trained in evidence-based mindfulness meditation and mindful movement as means of relieving stress, improving focus, managing symptoms of burnout, and learning to meet life with a greater sense of steadiness, peace, and presence.

FAQs
What makes MBSR different from other mindfulness and meditation courses?
MBSR is a standardized, evidence-based 8-week curriculum. Certified instructors complete formal, multi-step training so that each course is delivered with consistency, ethics, and care.
When does the program start and how long does it run
Orientation: Monday, January 5, 2026
Weekly Classes: We will meet on Monday from January 12- March 2, 2026
Time: 6:30 - 8:30 pm EST
All-Day Retreat: Saturday Feb 21
What’s included in the course?
Orientation session + 8 weekly classes
A brief 1:1 session with the instructor to discuss personal needs
One full-day silent retreat
All course materials
Support and accountability from a small learning community
Course certification that allows you to pursue Mindfulness Teacher training at Brown or other accredited universities
Do I need experience to take MBSR?
Nope. MBSR is appropriate for absolute beginners as well as more experienced practitioners.
How will we meet?
Each session is held live, via zoom. Participants are encouraged to access via computer or tablet if possible.
How much time will I need to dedicate each?
Each class is 2 - 2.5 hours long, plus 30-45 minutes of home practice each day.
What if I can’t attend every session?
Consistency matters, but life happens. If you must miss a class, you’ll have recordings of guided practices and handouts. However, failure to attend all sessions may impact end of class certification. If there is a second cohort running, you may attend an alternate session with that group.
Is this therapy?
No. While MBSR can be therapeutic, it is not therapy and is not an appropriate substitute for medical and/or mental-heath care.
What if the class sells out?
To keep the experience, particular small group sessions, personal and supportive, classes are capped at 20 people. If the cohort A reaches capacity, you’ll be offered a place on the waitlist or priority registration for cohort B, which will run Tuesdays at 10:30 am during the same time period.
Are there any scholarships available?
Yes, there will be up to two full scholarships available per each fully enrolled cohort.
What can I do after I finish the course?
After the course, you’ll leave with an established personal practice that you can carry with you for a lifetime. Additionally, course graduates might explore related paths - participation in additional meditation retreats, participation in local meditation groups, eligibility for teacher training, etc.
What is the refund policy?
From registration through the 1:1 session with the instructor: 100%
After class 1: 75%
After class 2: 50%
After class 3: No refunds available
